Before we get to TAB changes, let's go over Minecraft 26.2 changes that affect TAB. We have some excellent news and some slightly bad news.

• The bug in belowname objective introduced in 26.1 causing all named entities to have belowname visible was fixed. Not only that, but now it no longer appears on player entities that do not have a score set. This means 2 things. First, NPCs will no longer have any belowname forced when the feature is enabled. Second, it is now possible to hide belowname on individual players. See TAB changes below to see how this is implemented.
• Now it's time for bad news. We are all hoping Mojang will one day allow RGB names in the nametag. However, they seem to have taken the opposite path - it no longer supports magic codes, only the 16 legacy colors codes now.

TAB changes:

• Added support for Bukkit 26.2 and removed support for 1.9.x, 1.10.x, 1.11.x, 1.13.x, 1.14.x and 1.15.x. While they may sound like a lot, this change only affects 4 out of 30000 servers that updated TAB at least once this year.
• Updated Fabric and NeoForge to 26.2. 26.1.x is no longer supported.
• Performance improvements
• Resolved console warnings on Java 26+
• Belowname has received a new functionality in accordance with the new 26.2 functionality. When fancy-value evaluates to an empty string, the entire line will be hidden for 26.2+ viewers. If you want to take advantage of this and support both <26.2 and 26.2+ and don't want to show empty value to <26.2 players (because you want to hide it for 26.2+), but the original value instead, this is a bit more complicated. See belowname wiki page for a new example how to do this.
• Colors from placeholders returned by placeholder-api on Fabric are now properly displayed and no longer thrown away
• Improved dump command output
• Fixed PlaceholderAPI placeholders sometimes breaking on /btab reload with latest TAB-Bridge
• Added <head_texture:TEXTURE> tag resolver to MiniMessage parser for displaying skin by texture when having MiniMessage support enabled.
• Added support for "*" wildcard and regex into per world playerlist world groups just like global playerlist supports it.
• Scoreboard and bossbar custom toggle commands now pass all arguments to the main command
• Implemented disable-condition forwarding to proxy-support
• Fixed last color detection in tagprefix not noticing magic codes after using &r. Now with 26.2 no longer supporting those it probably doesn't matter though.

One more technical change at the end. Since version 6.0.2, it is no longer possible to support everything in one jar due to a bug in Paper 1.20.5 - 1.21.4 that crashes when a jar contains classes compiled with Java 24+, which was needed by modded platform. Now, it is also required by Paper 26.2. This means that splitting jars into "Vanilla" and "Modded" is not possible anymore. As such, there was a change and now there is the main jar with all classes (without any name suffix) and another jar called "Paper 1.20.5 - 1.21.4". Use the correct one. This pattern will follow indefinitely for all future updates.

• Updated Fabric and NeoForge to 26.1 - 26.1.2. Forge is still broken on those versions, so it has been (temporarily?) disabled.

• Scoreboard teams are now only sent to players who can actually see the target player in the tablist. A test subject running Velocity went from 100% usage of nametag thread at 2000 players to 20% at 3500 players (despite the fact that the feature's usage is scaling with O(n^2) complexity).
• Fixed startup errors on Bukkit 1.7.10

With the introduction of Java 25 into the jar (needed by modded platforms), it is no longer possible to support all desired platforms and versions in the same jar. This is because Paper's plugin remapper on versions 1.20.5 - 1.21.4 only supports up to Java 23 (using a higher Java version does not solve this). As such, 2 jars will be provided from now on. First jar with everything included, called "Fabric, NeoForge", which can be used everywhere except Paper 1.20.5 - 1.21.4. Second jar without modded platforms, allowing support for Paper 1.20.5 - 1.21.4, called "Vanilla".

Mojang added a brand new bug into the belowname feature in 26.1 that makes it unusable. For more information visit https://github.com/NEZNAMY/TAB/wiki/Feature-guide:-Belowname#261-visible-on-all-entities.

Modded platforms: Mojang's removal of obfuscation has a massive impact on modding tools, which were still not updated for 26.1 support. Even after this is done, we will need to wait for the mods that TAB hooks into to update to the new class naming. This may take a while and it's not worth delaying the Bukkit to wait for this. As such, modded platforms are staying on 1.21.11 for now.

With TAB now supporting all platforms, especially modded ones, it is not realistic to support all MC versions in one jar, so TAB only supports the latest MC versions(s). However, a new issue template was added to github issues, where you can request a backport of latest TAB version for your desired MC version (if it does not exist already or is very old).

This update contains 2 major changes:

• Unlimited nametag mode feature and bossbar for 1.8 (which used wither entity) got removed from the plugin as previously announced here.
• On Velocity, the plugin no longer uses bridge plugin to send scoreboard packets. Instead, a new plugin called VelocityScoreboardAPI was created, which will do this job much better with a much better performance.
• If you are using TAB-Bridge with TAB on proxy, update bridge to version 6.0.0.

As MC 1.21.2 is approaching, this is the final update for 4.x branch. From now on, only 5.x versions will be released, which will no longer have unlimited nametag mode and bossbar for 1.8 servers. This was originally planned to come with MC 1.22 rather than 1.21.2, however, Mojang has decided to rework entity packets in 1.21.2 and I don't see the point in adding support for it just to remove the whole feature soon after. Please note that the latest changes introduced a packet encoding bug in features TAB offers that causes <1.13 players to be disconnected immediately on join. This bug is inherited by forks as well, including Waterfall and possibly further forks as well. Considering the bungee update didn't add anything meaningful other than support for some 1.20.3 snapshot, it is better to stay on an older version (BungeeCord #1759 or lower, Waterfall #548 or lower) until this is fixed in BungeeCord. Disabling the plugin for <1.13 players to avoid the disconnect would be a bad solution for many reasons.

Fixed various issues on 1.20.2 BungeeCord. If you use it, and updated your backend to 1.20.2, don't forget to update bridge as well, because it compensates for a new bug introduced in bukkit 1.20.2 causing plugin messages to not be sent on join.

I hope with this the plugin is now finally stable for 1.20.2 players on BungeeCord. The reason why it took so long is because there are tons of bugs/issues in server software out of my control, which has to be compensated for, such as:

• On Bukkit 1.20.2, sending plugin messages on join may cause them to not be sent. God knows why. It was also very non-deterministic - trying the same thing several times gave different results. At the beginning, it worked totally fine for me. After making "some changes", it no longer worked. Not only on that test server instance, but not even on a clean installation anymore. I had to figure out which part of server code was blocking it and force an aggressive override, hopefully not breaking anything because of it.
• BungeeCord is in maintenance mode for a decade now and only does the most urgent things (usually just adding support for new MC versions). Tons of problems were introduced in 1.20.2 with no clear interest in resolving them. Asking for a fix barely has success, even if you open a github issue that clearly describes the problem and suggest multiple possible solutions, md5 acts like he sees no problem. Sending packets to players is considered "not an API" and any bug reports featuring sending packets are closed, without resolving it or adding the API. What's worse, even using the API the way it's advertised will throw errors.

While I thought not adding any more features and just fixing internal bugs (which will eventually have to get all fixed as they can't keep coming forever), it looks like adding support for new MC versions is going to be much more painful than expected and may end sooner than expected. I am not interested in begging people to fix bugs in their software that's out of my control, but prevents my plugins from working correctly.

I would like everyone to understand that by no law because I wrote a few lines of code I am now forced to maintain it for the rest of my life, for free, instead of doing things I enjoy, making software for a game I haven't played in a decade, for servers I never heard of, owned by people I have never met and never will who just look to make money off of plugins by getting the developers to configure their own plugins for them to then put them on their server and then sell ranks. Easy money. Or not?

Added 1.20.2 client support to BungeeCord (requires newer BungeeCord build with a new method added).

Note on BungeeCord: There are still no news on 1.20.2 client support on BungeeCord. While the issue linked in previous update got closed, it got falsely closed - nothing was fixed. Shall a fix be introduced and plugin require an update to take advatange of the fix, plugin will be updated.

Added 1.20.2 support.

Please note that the plugin currently won't work for 1.20.2 players on BungeeCord due to an issue that's currently being investigated. There is currently no feasible solution available on the plugin's end, so we will most likely need to wait for a fix on BungeeCord side. If any progress on this is made and it will involve a change to the plugin, an update will be made for 1.20.2 client support on BungeeCord.

Added back Vault hook and placeholders

If using bridge plugin, update it to 3.1.0

• Added 1.20 & 1.20.1 support
• Removed everything that should not be exposed in the API module and added API for layouts
• Pet name fix feature was removed from the main plugin and released as a separate plugin.
• Ping spoof feature was removed
• Removed Vault hook. According to bStats, 88% of servers that use TAB use LuckPerms and 5.6% use nothing. Other permission plugins are still supported when assigning groups by permissions.
• %vault-prefix% and %vault-suffix% got removed. You can use their PlaceholderAPI alternative or the internal LuckPerms placeholders
• %afk% got removed, use %essentials_afk% for essentials and %purpur_player_afk% for purpur's afk detection
• %essentialsnick% got officially removed, it was already partially removed previously only returning player's name
• Placeholder refresh interval categories were merged. Relational placeholders still have to start with %rel_, so those are not a problem. You are no longer able to specify server placeholders manually. Only those from server expansion are now registered as server placeholders.
• Added Fabric support. Due to nature of Fabric being unable to support more than 1 server version in a single jar, the release only supports 1.20.
• Moved layout.yml content to config.yml
• Feature are no longer being disabled in worlds/servers, but a disable-condition was introduced. It allows more customization. Bossbar and scoreboard got this option completely removed, as each configured object has display-condition already.
• Layout now properly hides vanished players only from those, who shouldn't see them (previously everyone had the same view). This opens new options for the future.
• Many other small changes and bug fixes

• Unlimited nametag mode will now show armor stands of invisible players to players in spectator gamemode (#785)

Fixed player login processing caused by a an error in Bukkit API
